MLK Day

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is Monday, January 15. Did you know the civil rights leader visited Greensboro in 1958?

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke at Bennett College in February 1958 about elections and the two major political parties. Keep reading for a roundup of events celebrating this amazing man’s legacy.

High Point MLK Celebration Weekend | Various locations | January 12-15

The City of High Point hosts various events this weekend including an MLK Parade and MLK Day Breakfast + Service.

MLK Day of Service | Barber Park | January 14 | 1-4 PM

Live out Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s commitment to service through The Volunteer Center’s annual event, which includes service projects, a non-profit fair, a children’s area, community art, and more.

MLK Memorial Event | Koury Convention Center | January 15 | 7:30 AM

Greensboro’s Human Rights Commission hosts a breakfast featuring keynote speaker Kenneth B. Morris, the co-founder and president of Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives (FDFI).

MLK Freedom Walk | Country Park | January 15 | 10:30 AM - 1 PM

Join fellow members of your community to walk at Country Park, with guest of honor Greensboro Police Assistant Chief S.M. Mardis attending.

MLK Day Parade | Benbow Professional Center Building | January 15 | 11 AM

The Greensboro NAACP’s MLK Day Parade honors the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The sign-up deadline to be in the parade is January 12 by 5 PM.

MLK Celebration: Developing Leaders for Tomorrow | UNCG Elliott University Center | January 24 | 7-8:30 PM

UNCG, NC A&T, and Guilford Technical Community College team up to present an interactive discussion about Black activism today.

  • Line Dancing - Grab your boots and get ready to dance the night away at Summerfield Farms. All skill levels are welcome. 6 PM

  • Hip-Hop Party - Head to Boxcar Bar + Arcade for a ‘90s-themed dance party with DJ WaWa. 9 PM - 12 AM

  • Comedy Night - The Idiot Box presents Steve Gillespie, who has appeared on CONAN and Amazon Prime’s Inside Jokes. Also available Saturday.

  • Community Musical - The Community Theatre of Greensboro presents Into the Woods at Starr Theatre. Available through January 21.

Saturday, January 13

  • Princesses & Pancakes - Experience a magical-themed breakfast, interactions with Belle, singalongs, storytime, and photo opportunities with a (mini) unicorn. 10 AM

  • Wheel Clay Class - Take a four-week beginner class at The Art Gallery at Congdon Yards. Supplies are provided. 1:30 PM

  • Cocktail Class - Learn about Adaptogen cocktails + zero-proof cocktails (and make your own) at Summerfield Farms. 3 PM

  • GOAT Awards - Attend the annual award ceremony at Carolina Theatre. The GOAT Award honors people in the community who deserve recognition for being the “greatest” at what they do. 7 PM

  • Symphony - Leslie Dunner conducts the Greensboro Symphony for a night of delightful music at the Steven Tanger Center. 8 PM

  • Monster Jam - Watch a monster truck rally featuring world-champion athletes at Greensboro Coliseum. Also available Sunday.

Sunday, January 14

  • Intro to Crocheting - Join Reconsidered Goods’ beginners’ crochet class to learn the basics of this classic hobby. Supplies are provided. 2 PM

  • Cocktail Class - Grab your friend and head to GIA to learn about whiskey cocktails. 3:30 PM

  • Whitney Houston Tribute - Enjoy a tribute show featuring Belinda Davids at the Steven Tanger Center. 7 PM

Other News

  • Book Club: Team member Brooke is leading Pints & Pages, a book club at SouthEnd Brewing Co. The club meets every third Wednesday of the month.


  • Sports: Registration is now open for the 2024 Greensboro spring sports leagues, which include baseball, slow-pitch softball, and kickball.

  • Arts: Creative Greensboro has launched Creative Allies, a residency program offering two 1-year artist residences with the Human Rights and Housing & Neighborhood Development departments. Applications are due February 14.


  • Internships: The Greensboro Hoppers are looking for interns for the 2024 season in several areas, including promotions, sales, and video. Apply today!


  • Opening: The grand opening of Muddle Cocktails is this Saturday, January 13. Patrons can also attend its soft opening on Thursday and Friday by reserving their spot on Muddle’s website.

  • Pairing Event - Join Rhyme & Reason Chocolate Co. for a chocolate and bourbon pairing at State Street Wine Company on January 16.

  • Wine & Chocolate Festival - Go to Greensboro Coliseum on January 27 for unlimited tastings of various North Carolina wines.

  • Stage Show - On January 31, Carolina Theatre presents Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. The production is perfect for 3rd-8th graders.
